What ICANN’s Commercial Domain Suffixes Mean for Online Marketing

By Kirstie | June 22, 2011

ICANN announced Monday the creation of new business-based domain suffixes (imagine going to coke.coke instead of coke.com), and the Internet went crazy with this news. Curious about how this change would impact online marketing and the web in general, I wrote a post, “What ICANN’s Commercial Domain Suffixes Mean for Online Marketing,” the day the news came out for Supercool Creative’s blog. So are you saying that there could be an seo.seo? I’ll never have to worry about this personally as I could never afford paying that kind of big money for a domain name. I rent all of my domains from GoDaddy.com for a measly 9.99 a year. I don’t see why having your domain be coke.coke is any better than coke.com. In terms of branding…coke.com is already there, while coke.coke would take some getting used to.

I agree; I would never pay the money for that, but I’m sure major companies will take advantage of this. It does, in the end, only make it more difficult to remember a URL.
